Designer and owner of Design By Us, Rasmus Larsson speaks on the considerations that he makes, when it comes to design and decorating with light. This interview teaches you a little about how to mix different lamps and why it's important to have lamps from different brands.

What does light and design mean to you?

"Design has played a big role in my life, since high school, when I started my company with a focus on halogen lighting. Lighting needs to be beautiful when turned on, but still do something for a room, when turned off."

What do you find especially interesting about working with designer lighting, in contrast to other forms of design?

"I believe that light and lamps have an extra dimension in opposition to furniture and other interior products"

"The light needs to be exactly right, in order for other objects in the room not to look misplaced"

What considerations do you have on incorporating aesthetics and the technical aspect in designer lamps?

"I'm probably, mostly a "Look" kind of guy. My approach is super visual and I include the technical aspect later in the design process.

The first priority is: "How does it look?"

When do you experience that light is most important for you in your everyday life?

"I experience the light as being important, when darkness falls. Then, it's nice to be able to control the feeling in the room and I do this with dimmers.

Another important thing, is that there are many different lamps with different purposes... Spots, floor lamps, wall lamps, table lamps - all in one big mix that complete the experience of the room."

Why does quality of light mean something to you?

"Right now, I don't have a lamp above my dining table. I got new dining table chairs and suddenly, the lamp didn't fit anymore. Instead of hanging a random lamp, I wait until I've found just the right one.

The light needs to be exactly right, in order for other objects in the room not to look misplaced. Light helps to complete et experience and the feel in your home.

Light has a central effect on whether a room looks empty or abandoned, or if a room radiates life - that pretty much covers it."

What is the typical mistake that you see with private consumers, when they decorate with light?

"A lot of people have an unpleasant light. This often happens, when the ceiling light is not turned off, which seems dramatic if it is the only light source.

Like I said, having several lamps, with different purposes is important, or you will end up with an unpleasant light."

How do we place and use our lighting in the best way, in our home?

"Place different lamps in your rooms, so you have the ability to control the feeling in the room. This is especially important in the North, where there is a big difference in seasons and how much natural light comes in, during the year."

What rule of thumb do you use to achieve the full experience of designer lighting in your home?

"It's important that you don't just have lamps from one company, but that you mix different styles.

Lamps have different properties, depending on who made it - designers think light differently and therefore, you need to mix it up"

Can you mention one thing that you do in your everyday life that clearly shows that you work with design and designer lighting on a daily basis?

"Myself, I have a bunch of lamps! I spend my entire day thinking about lighting, lamp designs and purposes.

Therefore, I make sure that ALL my lamps are turned off, when I go to bed. Some people always have a little light turned on - I want some peace from light, so I need darkness!"
